Utah law enforcement enrollment is down overall, and competition for qualified officers is fierce. Over the last three years, we lost 28 experienced Ogden Police Officers to Salt Lake City/County and currently, there are over 100 open positions between Salt Lake City/County. The problem is salaries. Salt Lake City pays officers $7-10hr more than Ogden. With next year’s 200M annual budget, we are not optimizing all of our resources to bridge this salary gap. This is not a new problem and doesn’t need to be one for another four years. It is time to take better care of our officers – and by extension our communities – with restructuring the budget and refining administrative efficiencies to raise our officers pay.
